Teen Numbers (11-19)
9 words · ~12 min
Teen numbers (11-19) are irregular in Arabic and must be memorized. 11 and 12 are unique: both parts agree in gender with the counted noun. For 13-19, the unit takes the OPPOSITE gender of the counted noun (reverse agreement), while عَشَرَ agrees with it. The counted noun after 11-99 is always singular and accusative (manṣūb).
Arabic numbers influenced mathematics worldwide. The word 'algorithm' comes from the name of the Persian-Arab mathematician al-Khwārizmī, and 'algebra' from his book al-jabr.
