The Exceptive (الاِسْتِثْنَاءُ)
Master exception constructions in Arabic using إِلَّا, غَيْر, and سِوَى, including the case rules that govern the excepted noun in complete affirmative, complete negative, and incomplete sentences.
Exception with إِلَّا - Complete Affirmative Sentences
The most common exception structure uses إِلَّا (except, but). A full exception sentence (اِسْتِثْنَاء تَامّ مُوجَب) has three parts: 1. المُسْتَثْنَى مِنْهُ - the group being excepted from 2. أَدَاة الاِسْتِثْنَاء - the exception particle (إِلَّا) 3. المُسْتَثْنَى - the excepted noun Rule for complete affirmative sentences: The excepted noun (المُسْتَثْنَى) is ALWAYS in the accusative case (مَنْصُوب), regardless of the grammatical role of المُسْتَثْنَى مِنْهُ. Structure: [complete sentence with general noun] + إِلَّا + excepted noun (accusative) Example: جَاءَ الطُّلَّابُ إِلَّا خَالِدًا (The students came except Khalid) Here خَالِدًا is accusative because the sentence is complete (has a subject الطُّلَّابُ) and affirmative.
