Verb Forms VI-X (الأَوْزَان)

Form VI (تَفَاعَلَ) and Form VII (اِنْفَعَلَ)

Form VI (تَفَاعَلَ): تَ prefix added to Form III. Common meanings: • Reciprocal action between multiple parties: تَبَادَلَ (exchanged with each other) • Pretending: تَجَاهَلَ (pretended to be ignorant), تَمَارَضَ (pretended to be sick) • Gradual or progressive action: تَزَايَدَ (gradually increased) Form VI is always intransitive and often requires a plural subject or indicates mutual action. Form VII (اِنْفَعَلَ): اِنْ prefix added to Form I. Common meanings: • Passive/reflexive of Form I: كَسَرَ (broke sth.) → اِنْكَسَرَ (got broken/broke by itself) • Spontaneous action without an external agent • Cannot be formed from roots beginning with hamza (ء), waw (و), yaa (ي), nun (ن), lam (ل), or raa (ر).

تَبَادَلُوا الهَدَايَا
tabādalū al-hadāyā
They exchanged gifts with each other
Form VI reciprocal: the action of exchanging is mutual.
تَعَاوَنَ - يَتَعَاوَنُ
ta'āwana - yata'āwanu
he cooperated - he cooperates
Form VI: mutual helping. Root ع-و-ن.
اِنْكَسَرَ - يَنْكَسِرُ
inkasara - yankasiru
it broke (by itself) - it breaks
Form VII passive/reflexive: كَسَرَ (broke sth.) → اِنْكَسَرَ (got broken).
اِنْفَتَحَ البَابُ
infataha al-bābu
The door opened (by itself)
Form VII: فَتَحَ (opened sth.) → اِنْفَتَحَ (opened on its own).
