Future Tense

Learn to express future actions using the prefixes سَـ (sa-) and سَوْفَ (sawfa) with the present tense verb.

Forming the Future with سَـ and سَوْفَ

Arabic forms the future tense simply by adding one of two particles before the present tense verb: • سَـ (sa-) - attached directly to the verb as a prefix. Indicates the near future. • سَوْفَ (sawfa) - a separate word placed before the verb. Indicates the more distant future or a stronger sense of certainty. Both translate as 'will' or 'going to' in English. In modern usage, the distinction between near and far future is often blurred.
